Do Australian permanent visa holders have the following questions?

Will the Australian permanent residence visa expire after 5 years? Will it cancel the Australian status?

If I stay in the country for too long due to the epidemic, will my Australian status be revoked after my visa expires?

In fact, unless involved in major legal events, Australian permanent residence visas will not expire or be cancelled.

What does the often-heard 5-year PR mean?

It is a visa that allows you to enter and leave Australia freely within 5 years after obtaining permanent residency. As long as you do not leave the country, you are still a permanent resident. Even if the 5-year visa expires, you are still a permanent resident. If you still want to enter and leave Australia after more than 5 years, you need to apply for an Australian Resident Return Visa (RRV).

All first Australian PR visas (189/190/143/801, etc.) have a 5-year entry and exit permit. After 5 years, you will need to apply for a 155 or 157 visa depending on your length of stay and connection with Australia.

Depending on immigration policy, the RRV can be 5 years, 1 year or 3 months.

If you have lived in Australia for 2 years (730 days) in the 5 years before submitting your application, you can get a 5-year RRV.

If you do not meet the two-year residency requirement, but can prove that you have close business, work, personal or cultural ties to Australia and that you will be beneficial to Australia, you may be granted an RRV with a validity period of one year.

If you do not meet the above conditions but can provide convincing reasons, such as a family member suffering from a serious illness overseas who needs care, you may be granted an RRV with a validity period of 3 months.

Therefore, the expiration of PR does not mean that you cannot continue to live and work in Australia, but you lose the right to enter and exit Australia. As long as you successfully obtain a 155/157 visa, you are still an Australian permanent resident and can enter and exit Australia freely.

For those who have obtained PR but have not lived in Taiwan for 2 full years within 5 years, don’t worry. The best option is to keep a valid RRV at all times!
