Extended question:

The National Police Certificate (NPC) is a summary of your criminal history in Australia. It is sometimes called a National Police Check.

If your request is for Commonwealth or Australian Capital Territory reasons, you must use the AFP.

You may want to ask the State Police to check the following things:

  • Recruitment and job applications
  • Volunteer and Nonprofit Positions
  • Working with children or vulnerable groups
  • Application for Licensing or Registration Scheme
  • Conduct work-related inspections in accordance with laws or regulations
  • Australian citizenship and permanent residence applications
  • Visa applications for some countries
  • Working overseas.

You will need to state the purpose of the police check in your application. Different purposes may lead to different outcomes, depending on the relevant law.

Anyone can request an NPC for their own use. However, you cannot request an NPC for someone else without their consent.

If you are under 18, you will need a parent or guardian to co-sign your application. If you are unable to do this, please contact us.

What does a police check include?

We compare your details (such as name and date of birth) with a central index. We then decide what information to include in accordance with the law and current policies.

Your NPC will list the "disclosable court findings" issued under Commonwealth, State and Territory laws, includingCrimes Act 1914 (Cth) andThe Outdated Convictions Act 2000 (ACT).

Our National Police Check also uses information from all Australian police forces to list any:

  • Local and interstate criminal and traffic court results
  • Outstanding Warrants
  • A pending charge means you have been charged with a crime but have not yet appeared in court.

Depending on the relevant state or territory legislation, it may not include:

  • Convictions considered under federal or state legislation
  • Finding of Guilt without Conviction.

Certain categories of employment or cheque purposes are not subject to any relevant legislation.

We cannot tell you in advance what may or may not be on your NPC. You will need to check with the criminal records department of the relevant state or territory police department.

Fees and Charges

Each NPC application costs $47. If you are required to provide fingerprints as part of your application, the total cost is $104.

The application fee is exempt from GST.

It should be noted that if the Immigration Bureau's criminal record result shows "no disclosurable court outcomes", it means there is no criminal record. If it shows a criminal record, it may affect the visa review. Please contact an immigration lawyer in time to prepare supporting materials for the character requirements to avoid visa rejection.
