Australian driver's license classification

Australian driver's licenses are divided into four levels: L license, red P, green P, and full license.

Australian driver's license Full License test process

Obtaining a Learner's Permit:First, you need to pass the basic road rules test and get a learner's permit (L license). This test mainly tests your knowledge of traffic rules. There are 45 questions in total, which can be answered on a computer. The test fee is $43.

Learning to drive for more than 120 hours:After you have a learner's permit, you will need to complete 100 hours of driving training with a full driver within at least 12 months. If you are under 25 years old, you will also need to complete an additional 20 hours of night driving training. All practice records need to be recorded in the Learner Driver Log Book.

Obtaining a Red P (P1 Provisional Driving License):Pass the road test and get a red P (first stage temporary driver's license). The maximum validity period of this stage is 18 months. The road test includes basic driving skills, judgment and decision-making ability, and the ability to coordinate driving with other vehicles. The test fee is $54. For specific road test guidance, please refer to here.

Hold a Red P for at least 12 months:During the period of holding a red license, you need to accumulate driving experience, and the speed requirement is 90 kilometers per hour. If you violate the rules and are deducted more than 4 points, the red license will be revoked.

Please note that different states may have slightly different driver's license policies, and the specific policies are subject to the local RTA.

L license (Leaner license)

This is a beginner's license. It is suitable for students who have just started to learn to drive and have no driving license from any other country.

You need to go to the nearest RTA to make an appointment or log on to the Internet to make an appointment for the traffic rules test (the test is a computer-based test). After passing it successfully, you can get a learner's driver's license and a log book.

After you have an L license, you can drive on the road to learn, but you cannot drive alone. There must be a qualified supervisor with an O license sitting next to the learner to supervise and guide his driving habits.

Red P (Provisional P1 driver's license)

Holders of learner driver licenses must be accompanied by a licensed person, drive under various road conditions, and learn to drive for at least 120 hours. A licensed person must sign the log book before they are allowed to take the road test. The red Provisional P1 is issued to people aged 17-25, and a red P sign is required on the front and back of the car when driving.

Green P (Provisional P2)

Applicable to drivers over 25 years old. Before driving, you must display the green P sign at the front and back of the car.

If you hold a P1 license: After holding a P1 license for one year, you will need to complete a hazard perception test online. Once you pass the test, you will be issued a P2 license.

After obtaining a P2 license, the license holder can drive alone, but must strictly abide by the restrictions and requirements of the P2 license.

Full license

After passing the DQT test, you can obtain a full license with no restrictions.

[Summary] The whole process of taking an Australian driver's license:

Test → L license → Learn to drive for more than 120 hours → Red P test → at least 12 months → Green P test → at least 24 months → Get FL (Full License).
In other words, it takes at least 3 years to obtain an Australian Full License!
